Gabriela Markin

Short bio

Gabriela Markin – a student of Cultural Studies – Cultural Texts at Jagiellonian University, an actress and director, and the founder of the Kraków Jewish Theatre (2024). In her work, she explores Jewish themes, researching contemporary theatrical forms and the repertoire of pre-war Jewish theatre, emphasizing its diversity beyond Holocaust narratives.

On December 4, 2024, she directed the play Sinner by Sholem Asch, staged in Polish with elements of Yiddish and featuring an international cast (Poland, Ukraine, USA). She is currently working on a monodrama with original music, set to premiere soon.

For the past three years, she has been associated with Teatr Bakałarz, where she performs in There Are No Such People. She plays the role of a non-heteronormative woman living under Sharia law in Chechnya, subjected to conversion therapy. The play, based on real events, was honored with a presentation at the LGBTQ+ Film Festival in 2024.

At the beginning of 2025, she was invited to teach at the American Acting Center in Israel – the country’s top English-language acting school. This made her the youngest teacher in AAC’s history. Her workshop focused on role development and acting techniques that help actors draw inspiration from everyday experiences while protecting their personal emotions and traumas. She taught how to build authentic characters, including through muscle memory work.

She is at the beginning of her artistic journey but is consistently developing her theatrical practice, bridging history and the present in a creative dialogue.
