Nicolás Melmann

Short bio

Nicolás Melmann, with degrees in Music composition (Universidad de Quilmes) and Sound Art (Universidad de Barcelona), is a composer, multi-instrumentalist, and sound artist who works in electronic music, performing arts, and sound studies. As a performer and researcher, he builds bridges between different spheres and approaches to sound production. His projects combine technology with instrumentation and take multiple forms. His compositions and installations oscillate between pure abstraction and harmony, melody and dissonance, creating ethereal soundscapes that seek to transcend the tangible through a mixture of concrete music, using ethnic instruments, spoken word, ambient, or electroacoustics.

Melmann considers sound a critical tool and is genuinely interested in exploring sonic possibilities and practices from artistic and sociological perspectives. As a composer, he explores the interaction between sound, space, movement, and body through his work in theater and dance. As a researcher, his current work delves into the social, anthropological, and ecological dimensions of sound, exploring its origins through installations, sound cartographies, and projects that intertwine thought with the field of listening and sound.

Melmann has toured in Asia, Europe, North and South America and shown his work in numerous venues and festivals, including the Metropolitan Museum of Art of New York and Victoria & Albert Museum (London), Polytechnic Museum (Moscow), Seoul Museum of Art, Denver Museum of Contemporary Art, Mutek Festival, Sónar Festival,  Gamma Festival (St. Petersburg), among others. He has also worked as a curator on “Lenguajes Sonoros” and been an artist in residence at the Red Bull Music Academy (New York) and ZKM – Zentrum Für Kunst und Medien (Karlsruhe), among others. During his career, Melmann has shared the stage with artists such as Alva Noto & Ryuichi Sakamoto, Nicola Cruz, and Max Cooper.
