“A Face to the Story in the Newspaper…” Berkowitz – performance

“A FACE TO THE STORY IN THE NEWSPAPER,” OR A SELBSTGESPRÄCH ABOUT QUEER POLISH JEWS BY A QUEER POLISH JEW (WHO LIVES IN BERLIN) AT A POLISH JEWISH FESTIVAL IN AN APARTMENT IN KAZIMIERZ IN JUNE 2019.

On Rosh Hashanah it is written, and on Yom Kippur it is sealed. How many shall pass on, how many shall come to be? On Erev Yom Kippur, a young woman talks with her great-grandmother about her Jewish family’s past and future, about building a new queer family without betraying her history. She struggles between hiding in her own thoughts and coming out to the world. The piece explores what we carry from generations of family history into our relationships today. A story of queer love and the search for acceptance while dealing with the fear of embracing a life on the margins.
The show is written and directed by Noemi Berkowitz, a Berlin-based director and actor whose directing work has been seen in Stanford, California and at Berlin’s Maxim Gorki Theater; she is actually half-Jewish and half-Polish (fully queer though).
  1. featuring: Izabela Gwizdak, Magda Roma Przybylska and Noemi Berkowitz
  2. violin: Carina Berkowitz
  3. dramaturgy: Marta Witak
