Art, Activism, Memory – Interdisciplinary Approaches to Difficult Heritage

Program

There are places, objects, and stories that can be described as “difficult” or “contested” heritage. This is a unique type of legacy—significant, yet often causing social divisions and resisting easy acceptance as part of a group’s history and identity. However, examples of artistic, activist, and institutional practices prove that an interdisciplinary approach—based on the use of art, participation, engagement of various actors, and grassroots initiatives—has the potential to address the challenges posed by difficult heritage.

This event brings together experts and practitioners in Jewish heritage, memory activists, artists, educators, and civil society organizations. Its goal is to collectively explore the potential of various approaches to so-called “difficult heritage.” In particular, we are interested in the role of art and a multidisciplinary set of tools in working with narratives, places, and objects associated with difficult heritage.

The event spans two days. The first day is dedicated to a gathering of Jewish artists. We invite creators who identify as Jewish and explore Jewish history, experiences, traditions, or religion in their work to join us for a meeting focused on relationship-building and discussing the role of art as a tool for engaging with the past. This gathering will serve as a step towards establishing a network (or another form of connection) among participants, which the organizing institutions are willing to support and develop based on the outcomes of the event.

The second day consists of four sessions. The first two focus on places and objects that can be categorized as difficult heritage. The third session will be a debate around one specific object and the questions it raises. The final session will be a panel discussion on the application of art as a method of working with difficult heritage.
