According to the etymology of the surname Bakon, it is borne by “sons of saints and martyrs.
The story of the cantorial Bakon clan begins in the Subcarpathian town of Kolbuszowa and leads through Tarnow, Krakow, Chrzanow, Berlin, Cluj-Napoca, Kosice, Johannesburg, New York and Israel, but also Belzec or Auschwitz.
With a multi-generational musical legacy that has endured to this day, war and the Holocaust did not end this remarkable story.
Join us for a special lecture that will introduce the traditions of synagogue music and the history associated with Cantor Hirsh Leib Bakon and his family.
