Life Is With People | vernissage  | smeeting with the artist

This immersive installation draws its inspiration from Life Is With People, an anthropological work by Mark Zborowski, a Polish-Jewish anthropologist and Soviet agent. Published in 1952, the book offers a distant, almost mythical portrayal of the shtetls—Jewish small towns in Eastern Europe that were destroyed during WWII.

Zborowski’s work does not recount specific histories but instead invites readers to imagine the shtetl through a lens of romanticized distance, absent of photographs or concrete visual references.

In response, Vishnizki-Levi transforms the photographic medium into a powerful tool of juxtaposition. Using a pinhole camera made from 1950s editions of Life Is With People, she creates a striking dialogue between the real and the imagined. This “book-camera” serves as an espionage-like reinvention of an everyday object, turning it into a hidden means of documenting history.

Join us for the opening at Kiosk.Events, followed by a Q&A with the artist at CentrALT.
