Michael Rubenfeld
Short bio
Michael Rubenfeld is a theatre artist and producer originally from Winnipeg and now residing in Poland. He is an award-winning actor and playwright and has worked extensively in film and television and on stages across the country and in parts of the United States and Europe. He performed in the North American premiere of Tadeusz Słobodzianek’s Our Class in both Toronto and Philadelphia. Michael is currently the Executive Artistic Producer of Selfconscious Productions. Together with Sarah Garton Stanley, he has made four works for Selfconscious, including their latest work, We Keep Coming Back, which unpacks contemporary Polish Jewish narratives and premiered in 2016 at the Krakow Jewish Culture Festival and Kana Theatre in Szczecin. It was remounted in Krakow for FestivALT and has since toured Poland and other parts of Europe and Canada.
Michael was the Artistic Producer of the SummerWorks Performance Festival in Toronto from 2008-2016 where he also co-founded the Progress Festival with the Theatre Centre. He has helped produce and present over 300 productions, including Counting Sheep – a Ukrainian Folk Opera about the 2014 Maidan protests in Ukraine. He produced the show at the Edinburgh Festival Fringe, where it won 3 major awards and he then produced the world-tour culminating in a two-month run in London, England directed by the Belarus Free Theatre. In 2017 Michael founded CanadaHub, an all-Canadian venue at the Edinburgh Festival Fringe, which has presented some of the most successful shows at the Fringe in the past few years. In 2017 Michael also co-founded FestivALT, where he currently continues to serve as Co-Director. He is currently developing several new projects and is a graduate of the National Theatre School of Canada.
