Immersive sound walk “In This Place” and discussion with Ludomir Franczak and Lena Rubenfeld for students of the XLIII Secondary School (XLIII Liceum Ogólnokształcące) on Limanowskiego Street in Kraków.
The event took the form of an educational meeting focused on contemporary approaches to commemorating difficult heritage. Students participated in the immersive sound walk “In This Place,” created by artists Ludomir Franczak and Marcin Dymiter as part of the FestivALT program. The walk uses the Echoes application, which activates site-specific audio recordings through geolocation, allowing participants to experience history through sound while moving through the urban landscape.
The project focuses on the area surrounding the former KL Płaszów camp in Kraków and explores the relationship between the present-day city and spaces marked by historical trauma. The audio materials include voices of residents, researchers, guides, and people connected to the history of the place, as well as elements of the surrounding soundscape. Together they form a multi-layered narrative about memory, landscape, and the ways the past continues to resonate in contemporary urban space.
The walk was followed by a discussion with Ludomir Franczak and Lena Rubenfeld about the development of the project, the use of the Echoes technology, and the role of ephemeral and sensory forms of commemoration in artistic and educational work with history and memory in public space. The meeting invited students to reflect on how art and digital tools can support historical awareness and encourage critical engagement with places shaped by difficult pasts.
